Health

The Financial Health of California Hospitals A new report funded by the California Healthcare Foundation examines the health of California's hospitals, including how they are owned and used, and who pays for care. Produced by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the report, The Financial Health of California Hospitals (269 pages, PDF), is an update of a 2001 report that looked at hospital performance in the state from 1995 to 1999. The new report found that 60 percent of California hospitals are affiliated with multi-hospital systems, that most hospitals are nonprofit entities, and that hospital resources are used more efficiently than elsewhere in the U.S., with fewer emergency department visits, hospital admissions, and days of hospital care per 1,000 residents than the national average.
