China's Economic Fluctuations and Their Implications for Its Rural Economy
A new report from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace suggests that China's rapid growth since 1978 has been driven by domestic demand rather than export-led, even in recent years when China's global trade surplus expanded rapidly. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the report, China's Economic Fluctuations and Their Implications for Its Rural Economy (94 pages, PDF), also concluded that China's management of its economic fluctuations since the 1980s has systematically disadvantaged the country's rural economy. The report's analysis unambiguously suggests that policy makers need to be more sensitive to the rural implications of macroeconomic policy-making.
