Philanthropy and Voluntarism

A Legacy of Leadership and Support for Grassroots Grantmaking The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation's Community Foundations and Neighborhood Small Grants Program operated from 1984 through 1994, involved twenty-five community foundations, and spawned the creation of Grassroots Grantmakers (formerly the Neighborhood Small Grants Network), a membership organization that connects and supports funders engaged in grassroots grantmaking. A Legacy of Leadership and Support for Grassroots Grantmaking (64 pages, PDF), a new report prepared by Tom Burns and Laura Downs, examines what happened to the grant programs launched by community foundations under the Mott program, explores how new entrants to the field have drawn from the Mott experience, and looks at how the field has evolved since the program ended.
