Community Colleges Still Unaffordable
Despite the lowest tuition in the country and tuition waivers for lowest-income students, California's community colleges are still too expensive for many residents, a new report funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation finds. Community Colleges: Making Them Stronger and More Affordable (PDF, 88 pages), argues that the high cost of related living expenses such as housing, food, transportation, health care, and textbooks can impose an overwhelming financial burden on community college students. Written by William Zumeta and Deborah Frankle for the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, the report urges increasing student access to existing financial aid, strengthening financial aid programs, and using revenues from tuition increases to support programs designed to improve student success.
