State of Tobacco Control 2006
According to the State of Tobacco Control: 2006 (summary 20 pages, PDF; full text 162 pages, PDF) — a new report from the American Lung Association — state governments are increasingly enacting smoke-free workplace laws. While there were nine smoke-free workplace states in 2005, today there are sixteen, along with the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The report, which grades all fifty states on the effectiveness of their tobacco-prevention programs, notes that the majority of states are failing to adequately fund programs designed to prevent tobacco use among children, despite increased funding for tobacco-prevention and -cessation programs in 2006.
