World TB Day - March 24
To mark World TB Day (March 24), the World Health Organization has issued Global Tuberculosis Control (277 pages, PDF). According to the report, the percentage of the world's population infected by TB peaked in 2004 and held steady in 2005. However, case loads continue to grow in Africa, the eastern Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. The report also notes that, as of 2005, directly observed treatment strategy (DOTS) programs, the internationally recommended strategy for TB control, had been implemented in 187 countries and were reaching 89 percent of the world's population.
