New Yorkers Weigh In on Homelessness, Housing

According to a new report from Public Agenda, eight in ten New Yorkers say homelessness is a major problem in their city, while more than a third fear becoming homeless because of a lack of affordable housing. Funded by the Rockefeller and Fannie Mae foundations, the report, Compassion, Concern and Conflicted Feelings: New Yorkers on Homelessness and Housing (37 pages, PDF), found that most New Yorkers consider shelter a basic human right. But they also believe in personal responsibility and support social service benefits "with strings attached" — including mandatory job training, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment.
