Celebration of African-American Poetry To mark Black History Month, the Academy of American Poets is exploring the rich tradition of African-American poetry, with offerings that include essays on the intersection of poetry with other art forms; important schools and movements in African American literary history, including the Harlem Renaissance; profiles of contemporary poets, including Nathaniel Mackey and Nikki Giovanni; and a selection of poems, older as well as contemporary, by African Americans. The site also provides a lesson plan for students in grades 9-12 to learn about the written and spoken word and poetry as social commentary.
