Philanthropy and Voluntarism

Foundation Giving to Minority-Led Nonprofits According to a new study by the Greenlining Institute, excluding a single outlier grant of more than $500 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, only 3.6 percent of the grant dollars awarded by America's twenty-four largest private foundations in 2004 went to minority-led organizations. Investing in a Diverse Democracy: Foundation Giving to Minority-Led Nonprofits (29 pages, PDF) examined grantmaking by the largest private U.S. foundations as well as California's largest private and community foundations and found that eleven awarded less than 3 percent of their grant dollars to minority-led organizations, while five awarded less than 1 percent.
