World's Worst Polluted Places
Industrial waste and emissions affect billions of people worldwide. But according to The World's Worst Polluted Places — The Top Ten (59 pages, PDF), a new report from the Blacksmith Institute, the most polluted sites are not widely known, even in their own countries. In an effort to prioritize sites for remediation, the report weighs polluted locations by size of the affected population, severity of the toxins involved, impact on children's health and development, evidence of a clear contamination pathway, and reliable evidence of a deleterious health impact.
