Gap Between Optimal and Actual U.S. Health Care
According to a new Rand Corporation study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, virtually every person in the United States, regardless of race, gender, income, or insurance status, is at risk of failing to receive needed care. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the report, Who Is at Greatest Risk for Receiving Poor-Quality Health Care? (10 pages, PDF), suggests that while some disparities in health care exist between different subgroups, they are small relative to the gap between what everyone needs and what they receive, and that quality-improvement programs focused solely on reducing disparities among subgroups could miss larger opportunities to improve the nation's healthcare system.
