Rural California Fact Sheet According to the Rural California Fact Sheet (2 pages, PDF), California's rural population grew to 3.9 million from 3.2 million, a 20 percent increase, between 1990 and 2000, compared to a 12 percent increase in the overall population of the state. The fact sheet also reports that many more rural Californians live in poverty (21.5 percent) than their non-rural counterparts (16.9 percent), and that only 16.5 percent have a college degree (compared to 23 percent of all Californians). Developed by the California State Rural Health Association, a grantee of the California Endowment, the fact sheet is designed to illustrate some of the specific health needs of rural populations in California.
