Harvard Study of the Shrinking U.S. Rental-Housing Market
According to a new report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, 200,000 affordable rental units in the United States are demolished every year, while only 100,000 new units are created, resulting in relentless upward pressure on the price of "affordable" rental housing. Funded in part by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the report, America's Rental Housing: Homes for a Diverse Nation (36 pages, PDF), looks at the demographics of the country's renters and other factors contributing to the shrinking supply of affordable rental units and offers a rather grim outlook for the future.
