Universal Symbols Overcomes Language Barriers in Hospitals
Devoted to helping healthcare facilities overcome language barriers, Hablamos Juntos has developed twenty-eight symbols (1 page, PDF) depicting typical hospital functions/units such as registration, pediatrics, and internal medicine. With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Hablamos Juntos tested the symbols on three hundred English and non-English speakers and found that seventeen were understood by at least 87 percent of the test subjects. The organization has also produced an implementation guide for hospital administrators and other healthcare professionals.
