Justice Issues in South Africa Since Apartheid
South Africa: Justice Sector and the Rule of Law (key findings, 36 pages, PDF; full document, 160 pages, PDF) recognizes South Africa's accomplishments since its transition to democracy in 1994 — as well as its shortcomings, including police abuse and prison overcrowding. Developed by the Open Society Foundation for South Africa and its project AfriMAP, the report delineates the work that remains to be done to bring the country's legal system into compliance with international standards.
