Survey of Literacy Skills of College Students Changes in technology have made the ability to use and manipulate written information even more important than it already was. In The Literacy of America's College Students (56 pages, PDF), a study funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the American Institutes for Research measured the literacy of 1,827 graduating college and university students from eighty institutions. Looking at three aspects of literacy — the ability to perform prose tasks such as read and use texts; the ability to search and comprehend forms; and the ability to conduct quantitative, computational tasks — the report found that only 1 percent of students in four-year institutions had "below basic" skills in all three areas.
