Classification of Mixed-Race Students by U.S. Colleges and Universities In a survey of 298 two- and four-year colleges and universities, only 27 percent said they offered mixed-heritage students a way to identify their heritage accurately. Conducted by the MAVIN Foundation and the Level Playing Field Institute, One Box Isn't Enough: An Analysis of How U.S. Colleges and Universities Classify Mixed Heritage Students (28 pages, PDF) found that nine schools had adopted the 1997 Federal Office of Management and Budget mandate to government agencies that allows individuals to mark one or more races on forms requesting racial data.
