Global Status of Biotech Crops in 2005 According to a new report from the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications, biotech crops were grown in twenty-one countries in 2005, up from seventeen in 2004. Funded by the New York City-based Rockefeller Foundation and the Fondazione Bussolera Branca in Italy, the report, Global Status of Commerialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2005 (highlights; executive summary), also found that the United States remains the principal grower of biotech crops, with 55 percent of the world's 1.2 billion acres devoted to such crops, while fully a third of the global biotech crop area was in developing countries.
