Online Civil Rights Resources for Teachers
On its Learning Page on Civil Rights — one of more than forty online resources for teachers provided by the Library of Congress — visitors are offered a look at life in the United States circa 1929, the year Martin Luther King, Jr. was born. Other links highlight the African-American quest for full citizenship, sources for ethnic and multi-cultural history, a timeline from slavery to Civil Rights, personal stories of Civil Rights activists, and an examination of Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that outlawed racial segregation of public education facilities. The site also provides lesson plans for grades 7-12 and profiles such African-American luminaries as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Thurgood Marshall.
