The Life Cycle of a Private Foundation, a Web-based tool from the Internal Revenue Service, provides links to information about the numerous interactions foundations have — from filing an application for tax-exempt status, to filing annual information returns, to making changes in their mission or purpose. The site also includes detailed descriptions of ways to avoid jeopardizing tax-exempt status or financial penalties. It contains snapshots of five stages: start-up, applying for tax-exempt status, filing requirements, maintaining compliance, and termination.
