Each year, more than 10 percent of North Carolina students, including nearly 60 percent of African-American males, are suspended from school. According to One Out of Ten: The Growing Suspension Crisis in North Carolina (13 pages, PDF), published by the North Carolina Child Advocacy Institute and funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, suspensions happen in every grade, but mostly between the sixth and tenth grade. The report urges educators to involve family members and/or caring adults through programs like Communities in Schools; perform risk assessments for suspended fifth- and sixth-graders; and expand alternative learning programs for disruptive kids.
