An Examination of U.S. Preparedness in Case of a Flu Pandemic

According to a report from Trust for America's Health, if a moderately severe strain of a pandemic flu virus hit the United States, 70 million Americans might be at risk of contracting the disease and 2.3 million could be hospitalized. A Killer Flu? (21 pages, PDF) examines shortfalls in the amount of available anti-viral medication and hospital capacity to respond to an epidemic, notes gaps in U.S. readiness, compares U.S. preparedness to that of the United Kingdom and Canada, and offers recommendations designed to boost America's preparedness. TFAH also provides a downloadable brochure, It's Not Flu as Usual: What Businesses Need to Know About Pandemic Flu Planning (8 pages, PDF), as well as a checklist (2 pages, PDF) of concerns regarding the revised national pandemic flu plan.
