U.S. and State Poets Laureate

Since 1937, the Librarian of Congress annually has appointed a U.S. poet laureate to promote and encourage a greater appreciation of poetry through lectures and readings. U.S. poets laureate receive a $35,000 stipend and have included such notables as Robert Penn Warren, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost, James Dickey, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Rita Dove. In addition to a timeline of U.S. poets laureate, the Library of Congress Web site provides a list of state poets laureate.
