Children and Youth

KIDS COUNT Data Book 2005 and State-Level Data Online The sixteenth annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, the centerpiece of the national and state-by-state initiative of the Annie E. Casey Foundation to track the status of children in the United States, was released in July, and is available online with interactive features. The lead essay, Helping Our Most Vulnerable Families Overcome Barriers to Work and Achieve Financial Success (44 pages, PDF), examines the effects of substance abuse, domestic violence, incarceration, and depression. A complementary program, KIDS COUNT State-Level Data Online, launched by the foundation this past spring, incorporates about seventy-five measures of child well-being, including ten key indicators, such as percent of low-birth-weight babies, child and teen death rates, teen pregnancies, and percent of children living in poverty. The online database is useful for generating custom reports for a geographic area or to compare geographic areas on a particular topic, such as education, health, or youth-risk factors.
