Medicare and Medicaid at Forty

President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare and Medicaid health coverage programs into law forty years ago today. To commemorate that milestone in U.S. social policy, the Kaiser Family Foundation has produced and collected a variety of materials examining the programs' history and evolution and made them available in a new area of its Web site, Medicare & Medicaid at 40. Among the offerings there, visitors will find three documentaries, extended interviews with policy makers and government officials involved in the programs' creation and implementation, interactive historical timelines, statistical charts, and a Webcast featuring remarks by KFF president Drew Altman, historian Robert Dallek, and Joseph Califano Jr., former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Visitors to the site can also read and/or download the article CMS Reflections: A Milestone for Medicare and Medicaid, from Health Affairs magazine.
