Protecting Natural Areas From Urban Sprawl
Over the next twenty-five years, between 6 percent and 60 percent of the remaining non-federal natural lands in the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas are likely to be swallowed up by development. Endangered By Sprawl: How Runaway Development Threatens America's Wildlife (68 pages, PDF) urges that wildlife habitats and open space, or "green infrastructure," be given the same level of attention in planning decisions as the "gray infrastructure" of roads, sewers, and utilities. Published by the National Wildlife Federation, Smart Growth America, and NatureServe, the report
estimates the pace of land consumption in fifteen metropolitan areas between 2000 and 2025, and describes what local communities have done to protect their natural lands from overdevelopment and loss of critical ecosystems. The study was funded by the Deer Creek and Henry M. Jackson foundations, and the Moriah Fund.
