Twelve Principles of Governance for Nonprofit Boards

Nonprofit boards risk becoming an under-performing asset for their organizations if they settle for passive stewardship over active leadership. To inspire boards to achieve more, BoardSource convened a group of nine governance experts to study the inner-workings of superior boards. After defining and analyzing the common traits of these boards, the panel distilled what they do and how they do it into twelve overarching principles, delineated in The Source: Twelve Principles of Governance That Power Exceptional Boards. An overview of each principle (e.g., mission driven, independent-minded, and results-oriented) is available with free registration at the BoardSource Web site.
