Projected Hurricanes in U.S. for 2005
Hurricane season is upon us, and this year hurricane-force winds of 74 mph or greater are most likely to strike in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (a 10.3 percent chance); Miami Beach (10.2 percent); and Naples, Florida (10 percent), according to an analysis of U.S. coastal cities by University of Central Florida professor Mark Johnson and Georgia researcher Chuck Watson. Other cities at risk from storms include West Palm Beach, Florida (9.1 percent); New Orleans (6.9 percent); Wilmington, North Carolina (6.7 percent); and Charleston, South Carolina (5.1 percent). Such odds might seem low, but even a 5 percent chance is high — "a one-in-twenty chance that your house will at least experience roof damage and that you could be sitting in the dark for several days," Watson notes. The findings are available on a Web site that tracks storms worldwide.
