Health Access Limits for African Immigrants Giving Voice to the Voiceless: Language Barriers and Health Access Issues of Black Immigrants of African Descent (75 pages, PDF), published by the Summit Health Institute for Research and Education and funded by the California Endowment, argues that African-American immigrants to the United States face formidable barriers to health care due to limited English proficiency, lack of resources, their uninsured status, and their limited understanding of how to navigate the healthcare system. The report recommends increasing financial support and staff training for health clinics, hospitals, and community-based organizations that serve African immigrants and refugees, especially outreach programs that address African immigrants' most common health problems, including diabetes, hypertension, and HIV/AIDS.
