Cancer Awareness Project for Michigan's Arab Americans
A recent survey of adult Arab Americans in Michigan indicated that only 27 percent were aware of ever having been screened for cancer, although most had health insurance. To address the problem, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation is funding a two-year initiative to develop and test a culturally specific Arab American cancer awareness program. The project will be conducted by researchers at Wayne State University's College of Nursing using focus groups to determine what information is valuable to Arab Americans and to identify strategies to promote increased cancer screening.
