Statistics on Obesity in the United States A Nation At Risk: Obesity in the United States (42 pages, PDF), a new report from the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides a statistical portrait of one of the fastest-growing epidemics in the United States. Since 1991 the prevalence of obesity has increased 75 percent in this country, and twice as many children — and three times as many teenagers — are obese today as in 1980. The report also examines some of the factors leading to, as well as the financial and health consequences, of obesity and argues that the first step in combating the epidemic is to raise public awareness of the threat it poses to the nation's health.
