Outdoor Air Pollution Lower But Still Dangerous Millions of people live in places where pollution in the air makes it difficult, even dangerous, to breathe. State of the Air 2005, a report from the American Lung Association, examines the two most toxic and prevalent air pollutants — ozone and particle pollution — in U.S. counties where they are measured and finds that although levels of both pollutants are down, more than 152 million Americans — 52 percent of the population — live in counties with unhealthful levels of ozone or particle pollution. To check the air quality in your state, see the How's Your Air? section of the report.
