Tax Dollars and Where They Go
Value for Family Tax Dollars: How Does the U.S. Stack Up?, a briefing paper issued by the Council on Contemporary Families, details how Americans' income tax dollars will be spent in 2005. For instance, for every $100 in income tax, about $30 will go to military and defense spending; $20.27 to healthcare programs; $18.60 to paying interest on the national debt; $6.58 to income security (including Supplemental Security Insurance, or SSI, $2.13; Earned Income Tax Credit refunds, $1.94; Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, $1.03; and Child Tax Credit refunds, $.52); $3.67 to education; $3.44 to veterans' benefits; $2.69 to nutrition programs; $2.14 to housing; $1.72 to environmental protection; and $.94 to job training.
