Arts and Culture

Arts Valued in Southeastern Wisconsin Based on data gathered from telephone interviews with 470 residents in the seven-county Southeastern Wisconsin region, including metropolitan Milwaukee, and detailed in Arts and Culture in Southeastern Wisconsin: The Public Speaks (9 pages, PDF), most citizens believe the arts strengthen the area's economy, make it an appealing place to live, and add to the development of its children. Over 40 percent would be willing to pay more property tax, or a dedicated sales tax, to fund arts organizations. Despite this, 41 percent feel they are not very informed about cultural offerings in the region; only 22 percent said they or a household member had contributed money to one or more local arts organizations in the past two years; and only 9 percent had volunteered at one of them. Reasons residents gave for not attending cultural events were cost, parking or safety concerns, insufficient understanding of the performance, and feeling uncomfortable in the setting. The report was commissioned by the Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
