Shell Marine Habitat Program Awards $2.1 Million in Grants

The Shell Oil Company Foundation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation have announced that more than $2.1 million in challenge grants have been awarded to 11 Gulf Coast marine and wildlife conservation groups and research programs as part of the Shell Marine Habitat Program. Since the program's inception in April 1998, $9.2 million in matching grants has been made available for various Gulf of Mexico education and conservation efforts.

The Shell Marine Habitat Program was established with a $5 million gift from Shell to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The program was formed to support projects that conserve, protect, and enhance the Gulf of Mexico's ecosystem.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a nonprofit organization that addresses the root causes of environmental problems by awarding challenge grants to on-the-ground wildlife, fish, and habitat conservation projects. Funds awarded through the foundation are required to be matched with additional funding, multiplying the investment in conservation and encouraging grantees to use the funds to involve other organizations in partnerships.

FCnote: The Shell Oil Company Foundation (TX) had assets of $67,153,995 and made grants totaling $24,799,427 in the year ending 12/31/98.
