The Shell Marine Habitat Program was established with a $5 million gift from Shell to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The program was formed to support projects that conserve, protect, and enhance the Gulf of Mexico's ecosystem.
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a nonprofit organization that addresses the root causes of environmental problems by awarding challenge grants to on-the-ground wildlife, fish, and habitat conservation projects. Funds awarded through the foundation are required to be matched with additional funding, multiplying the investment in conservation and encouraging grantees to use the funds to involve other organizations in partnerships.
FCnote: The Shell Oil Company Foundation (TX) had assets of $67,153,995 and made grants totaling $24,799,427 in the year ending 12/31/98.
