PHILANTHROPY NEWS DIGEST ![]() International Fund Raising for Not-for-Profits: A Country-by-Country Profile, edited by Thomas Harris. 1st ed., New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1999. Understanding and comparing fundraising techniques and strategies in other countries can often be a frustrating task. For those international fundraisers who have looked in vain for resources on fundraising practices abroad, Thomas Harris, the editor of this hefty volume, attempts to fill the gap in the current literature and has succeeded in creating a basic, well-researched reference tool. The countries covered in this volume include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Harris' reasons for selecting these countries included broad geographic representation, cultural diversity, and the presence of a substantial fundraising industry. Similarly, each country is profiled according to the same set of criteria: historical background; legal and fiscal structures currently in place; a general analysis of the not-for-profit sector; sources of funding and fundraising practices; and further references (including a bibliography and numerous useful contacts). Thanks to its logical structure, International Fund Raising for Not-for-Profits is valuable both as a tool for comparative analysis and as a broad overview of the field. And while not intended as a scholarly work, the book is likely to stimulate further discussion and research about international philanthropy.
