Georgia Church Receives $60 Million Bequest

The congregation of a small Methodist church in St. Marys, Georgia, has received a $60 million bequest from a businessman who hadn't been to church in more than 20 years, the Associated Press reports.

Warren Bailey, who died July 14 at the age of 88, left the gift to St. Marys United Methodist Church. Bailey, who was divorced and had no children, did not attend services but had made regular donations of approximately $100,000 a year to the church.

With an annual budget of $285,000 and roughly 350 members, St. Marys has been a little overwhelmed by the gift. "It's all unreal to me," said the Rev. Derek McAleer.

Bailey made no restrictions on the use of his gift. While church members have advised St. Marys to give some of the money away and invest the rest, McAleer, who has already begun receiving calls asking for money, said he worries that greed may infect the congregation. "How do we remain a Christian church?" he asked.

"Georgia Church Receives $60 Million." Associated Press 10/30/200.
