United Nations Foundation and Rotary Foundation Announce Partnership to Eradicate Polio

The United Nations Foundation and the Rotary Foundation announced a major partnership to help fund the campaign to eradicate polio worldwide reports Business Wire. The two organizations will jointly work to engage and encourage the involvement of foundations, private sector corporations and individual donors in the fight against polio.

"Today we are at the forefront of victory in the fight to end polio," noted Chairman-elect of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. "However, the eradication campaign is entering the most difficult leg of the journey involving the poorest regions of the world. In recognizing this urgency, we are collaborating our efforts with the UNF to meet the extraordinary costs of polio eradication."

The number of polio cases has been reduced 90 percent over the past ten years. Experts predict that there will be a $300 million funding shortage toward the $1 billion in donations needed for the purchase of vaccines, medications and other expenses during the period of 2000-2005. To date, approximately $700 million has been donated toward the effort, including a $28 million committment from the UN Foundation and a $50 million donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
