Foundation Description:
Established in 1994, the Rapides Foundation is a philanthropic organization
that provides grants to organizations throughout an 11 parish service area
of Central Louisiana.
Although new to central Louisiana as a grantmaking organization, the Rapides
Foundation grew out of a legacy of health care and community service
spanning back to 1903, when a group of six physicians formed the 20-bed
Alexandria Sanitarium. The Louisiana Baptist Convention acquired the
sanitarium in 1917 and operated it as the Baptist Hospital until 1970 when
it was turned over to the community as Rapides General Hospital. From that
point, the hospital flourished as Rapides Regional Medical Center and
developed into one of the leading nonprofit hospitals in the state. A joint
venture between Rapides and the for-profit Columbia/HCA created the Rapides
Foundation as the largest endowed charitable foundation in Louisiana with
initial assets of almost $150 million. Current assets are over $200 million.
The foundation currently makes grants in the fields of Health &
Well-Being; Education; and Arts & Humanities.
Home Page:
The simple, colorful home page contains links to seven central site areas --
Resources, Grants, Dates, What's New, About Us, Contact, and Service Area --
that make all the information at the site immediately and easily accessible
to users.
Outstanding Feature:
The Rapides Foundation received four awards for oustanding communications in
the Council on Foundations' 2000 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards Program, and
this commitment to clear, purposeful communications is apparent throughout
the foundation's site, which provides the information of most use to
grantseekers -- areas of interest, guidelines, and deadlines -- in compact,
cleanly organized formats.
Honorable Mentions:
The site's Resources area
offers a variety of helpful tools and information for grantseekers including
a project budget worksheet, newsletters, and relevant links.
