Duke University Receives $1.5 Million Grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
A $1.5 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation combined with a $2.8 million Duke University gift will establish the Duke University Summer Biomedical Science Institute. The residential summer program for underrepresented minorities will offer 125 college and graduate students clinical experience and other related skills needed to compete for medical school acceptance. The curriculum wil be completely web-based and will offer courses in biophysics, advanced biology, calculus and chemistry. In partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded eight similar programs at schools including Vanderbilt University, Yale University, and Baylor College of Medicine.

The National Institutes of Health Award $9.4 Million Grant to University of Utah
The Specialized Center of Research at the University of Utah received a $9.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant will fund the study and reserach of the causes of sudden cardiac death. Separated into six subprojects, the grant enables a study that ranges from an examination of post-cardiac arrest patients as well to study of the electrical conduction of cardiac muscle cells. Each of the six subcategories focus on the electrical abnormalities of the heart.
