Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado Conversion Foundation Gears Up to Give

Caring for Colorado, a nonprofit public foundation created last year as a result of the for-profit conversion of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado, is gearing up to disburse some of its $158 million in assets to health-related projects and organizations in the state.

Beginning in June, board members will travel to 10 Colorado communities to assess the most pressing health concerns of Coloradans and locate programs that effectively address those concerns. The foundation plans to disburse $7 million to $8 million in grants in 2000.

"What we are trying to do is just go out and listen," said Carol Plock, executive director of Poudre Health Systems and program committee chair for Caring for Colorado. "We want to make sure we are hearing from consumers, consumers' rights groups, providers, business."

The foundation, which was created after Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado was sold to for-profit Anthem Inc. last November, plans to start accepting comments on specific health concerns from Coloradans through a toll-free number and a Web site by mid-June. The feedback will be organized into a report that board members plan to release to the public in October.
