Illinois Attorney General Sues Three Charities

Charged with confusing the public, misleading donors, and failing to account for $3 million in funds, three charities and their agents have been sued by Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan, the Associated Press reports.

The charities, one based in California and two based in Texas, are alleged to have used the same name, the American Deputy Sheriffs Association, Inc., to confuse donors when soliciting donations. The organizations, which all had their charity registrations revoked in Illinois, also failed to meet the law enforcement officer representation requirement. Illinois state law mandates that 80 percent of the charity's trustees or voting members must be active or former law enforcement officials in order to represent law enforcement officers as a charity.

Lawsuits by the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general in at least four other states have also been brought against the defendants.
