Goizueta Foundation Emerging as Major Funder in Atlanta
The Goizueta Foundation, which was created by Roberto C. Goizueta, the late CEO of Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Co., is quietly becoming a major philanthropic force in the city, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution reports.
Following on the heels of last month's $10 million gift to fund scholarships and endow three new chairs at Emory University's Goizueta Business School, the foundation has announced a $1 million grant to Agnes Scott College to endow two scholarships for Hispanic/Latina students.
"It's really magnificent," said Lewis Thayne, Agnes Scott's vice president of institutional advancement. "We don't get many gifts this size. And we hope the Goizueta Foundation's gift will inspire others."
The foundation is chaired by Goizueta's widow, Olga C. de Goizueta, who, while largely avoiding the limelight, takes a hands-on approach to grantmaking, personally visiting with Agnes Scott College president Mary Brown Bullock, for example, to learn more about the institution before approving the grant.
Other recent grants by the foundation include a $1.25 million gift of stock to the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami and a three-year, $120,000 grant to the Atlanta Opera to support its outreach activities to schools with large numbers of Latino students as well as its ongoing programs with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Atlanta.
