Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund Announces Recipients of Writers' Awards

The Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund has announced the recipients of its final round of Writers' Awards.

The awards go to eight authors of national distinction, each of whom will receive an award of $105,000 to be paid in three annual installments of $35,000. The winning authors will collaborate with cultural, educational, and community organizations around the country to create public programs that foster a greater appreciation for contemporary literature. The New York City-based PEN American Center, a professional membership organization for writers whose mission is to advance the cause of literature and reading, also received a grant of $350,000 to coordinate and administer the community-based programs.

This year's awards will support a range of projects, including playwright Tony Kusher's fieldtrips and writing workshops for New York City youth and poet Mark Doty's master classes for adults at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center in New York. Since the program's inception in 1990, the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund has granted $12.5 million to more than 90 writers and community-based organizations. The awards were designed to give accomplished writers more time to devote to their writing, while encouraging them to connect with readers in their communities. This summer, the fund will publish a report that captures the history, accomplishments, and spirit of the program.

"Through the Writers' Awards program, many of America's most distinguished writers have engaged readers in local communities through libraries, literacy programs, community-based organizations, and schools," said Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds president M. Christine DeVita. "They have underscored the important role artists play in helping people make the arts part of their daily lives and their community."

Although this is the last year of the Writers' Awards program, the fund remains committed to supporting the role of artists in creating and providing learning experiences in communities across the country.
