Law students from the Nonprofit Organizations/Small Business Clinic, working with Professor Barbara A. Schatz at the Columbia University School of Law, will lead a presentation on the legal and tax aspects of forming a nonprofit organization.
The workshop will include the following topics:
- Steps in incorporating and applying for tax-exempt status
- Corporate and tax alternatives for nonprofits that plan to seek grants
- Which issues nonprofits can handle themselves and which should be referred to a lawyer
- How nonprofits can obtain free legal assistance
There will be ample time for questions.
