Mission:
TOPAZ ARTS, Inc. is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary arts
organization whose mission is to provide a space for the creative process.
Located in Woodside, NY in the borough of Queens, the 2,500 sq. ft.
facility houses a 25'x50' rehearsal studio with a sprung dance floor, an
audio/media room and a multi-purpose gallery. TOPAZ ARTS provides hundreds
of artists with space in which to create, explore and share their work
with the community, assisting projects in the development and presentation
of their work.
Background:
Founded in 2000 by artists Todd Richmond (composer/visual
artist) and Paz Tanjuaquio (choreographer/dancer), their inspiration for
creating TOPAZ ARTS stems from their own artistic process. Having worked
on projects since 1993, they saw a great need for a space in which to
explore collaborations. TOPAZ ARTS was formed to provide such a place
where the facilities meet the needs of artists -- a space where
collaborations can flourish and the process shared with the community.
Current Programs:
TOPAZ ARTS offers services that cater to the artistic
process and the making of contemporary dance, providing opportunities for
the presentation of works in the visual and performing arts. Our SPACE
RENTAL PROGRAM offers subsidized rates for dance rehearsals starting at
$10 per hour. Our TECHNICAL SUPPORT PROGRAM provides affordable in-house
services for audio projects, set and graphic design. TOPAZ ARTS SHOWINGS
host informal performances and visual arts exhibitions – often presenting
first-time solo shows. Partnering with other leading arts organizations,
TOPAZ ARTS provides increased opportunities for artists. Currently in
partnership with the Queens Museum of Art, four choreographers are
selected through an open call for a summer dance residency which includes
5-weeks of free rehearsal space, a $500 stipend and a performance at the
museum. Upcoming partnerships include co-presentations with The Isamu
Noguchi Museum featuring collaborations between dance and set design.
Funding Needs:
TOPAZ ARTS, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
providing a creative space for artists and the community. TOPAZ ARTS seeks
funding to maintain its facilities and to continue our programs that
enable artists to create and audiences to experience contemporary works of
art.

Every month, the "Spotlight On" highlights the activities
of a different 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located
in the tri-state region (NY, NJ, or CT). The selection
of organizations for the "Spotlight On" is based
on criteria such as programmatic interests, geographic
focus, and size, to ensure the broadest possible
representation of the region's nonprofit sector.
