These four areas need to be understood for any potential request to be successful. He outlines five further essential considerations: determining the target gift amount; deciding which interests of the funder most closely match the organization's priorities; what the prospect will need to know and experience in order to stimulate the gift; how to involve the spouse; and how to select the best volunteer to make the ask.

Eisenberg, who was a founder and co-chair of the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, a vice president of the National Neighborhood Coalition, and a columnist for the Chronicle of Philanthropy, discusses common problems such as nonprofits being uncertain of funding renewal and the unfair access to funding based on personal contacts. He identifies new trends such as foundations setting their own initiatives (rather than funding a nonprofit's pre-established need), less general operating support and funding only the least risky projects. Furthermore he comments on the lack of diverse thought among foundations and the lack of foresight/goal setting for where the philanthropic community should be heading in the future.
