Mission:
The Center for the Urban Environment is dedicated to educating the public about the built and natural environments of New York City.
Current Programs:
The Center conducts environmental education programs for schools and youth, including afterschool enrichment; environmental science summer and Saturday camps; teacher professional development and parent involvement programs. In addition, the Center offers public programs that include walking tours of Brooklyn, bus tours, and harbor cruises for adults and families that feature environmental exhibitions.
New York City Department of Education and New Visions for Public Schools: In its ongoing efforts to empower the next generation of leaders, the Center has continued its partnership with the New York City Department of Education and New Visions for Public Schools to establish two new small high schools in Brooklyn. Already the lead community partner for the Academy of Urban Planning, which opened in fall 2003, the Center opened the Green School: An Academy for Environmental Careers, and the Academy for Environmental Leadership, in 2006.
Community Literacy Programs: In 2003, the Center established the Bushwick Family Literacy Initiative and, through its being adopted as a model program by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, the Center was granted two additional family literacy sites and one adolescent literacy site for other Brooklyn communities.
Pre-K-12 Schools Program: The Center offers students, parents, and teachers the opportunity to explore the
neighborhoods of New York City through engaging, hands-on programming in a variety of formats. - Early childhood programs for students in Pre-K through 3rd grade to promote and reinforce literacy skills, math skills, and scientific exploration.
- Urban ecology programs for students in grade 4-12 uses hands-on explorations to engage students in scientific study. With a focus on the
connections between ecological systems in local urban environments,
the department’s curriculum-based school and
after-school programs address mathematics, English language arts,
applied learning, and science standards.
- Urban design programs help students in grades 4-12 develop an awareness
and appreciation of the built environment through hands-on
programs in which students examine the history, design, and planning of the
neighborhoods and communities in which they live.
In 2008, the Center received a $250,000 grant from State Assemblymember Joan L. Millman to support the building of a green facility in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. The Center has on-site recycling, a film screening about supporting local businesses, and a Sustainable Business Network corner.
Funding Needs:
The Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment seeks funding support from individuals, corporations, and other funders. The Center also offers memberships.
