Description:
The Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House in Long Island City received a grant from the Citigroup Foundation to fund a financial education program for local housing-project residents. The Riis House serves the 15,000 residents of Queensbridge Houses, the largest housing project in the United States.
Earlier in the year, five Riis House staff received training to conduct basic finance classes for 125 children. The $25,000 grant would allow the Riis House to launch a year-long program that would include classes for adults, with sessions tailored to English speakers, Spanish speakers, and seniors.
"There is a great need in the community, among people of all ages, for financial education programs that teach the basics of saving, investing and borrowing," remarked Riis House Director Bill Newlin.
Dara Duguay of Citigroup added that the program "will give so many individuals and families in Queens an education that will serve them well for the rest of their lives."
Established in 1994, the Citigroup Foundation's funding priorities include economic and community development and education.
