Broad Foundation Gives $4 Million to Recruit Principals for New York Schools
One day after naming California's Long Beach Unified School District as the winner of the 2003 Broad Prize for Urban Education, the Los Angeles-based Broad Foundation has announced a $4 million donation to New York City for a program designed to recruit and train principals, the New York Times reports.
The Leadership Academy, as the program is known, is a component of New York City schools chancellor Joel Klein and Mayor Michael Bloomberg's effort to overhaul the city's troubled public school system. The gift from the foundation brings the total raised for the program to $38.5 million, with an additional $11.5 million in pledges. The mayor and Klein have said they hope to raise $75 million for the program over three years.
At a press conference to announce the gift, Mayor Bloomberg described the donation and another recent $5 million gift from the Broad Foundation as "a great vote of confidence in Chancellor Klein and his vision as to how we are going to take the largest public school system in the country and make it better."
